My name is MJ Bienvenu and I'm chair of the Gallaudet University Sesquicentennial Steering Committee. The theme for the celebration is Gallaudet University: Celebrating 150 Years of Visionary Leadership. It is a very exciting time for the university as we mark this historical milestone. We have made plans for various activities throughout the year; others on this video will describe the events. It is truly going to be an engaging year for the university.
My name is Felicia Williams. I graduated with a Masters degree last May and am teaching in the Department of ASL and Deaf Studies. I am excited to be part of this historic celebration.
We've planned important events including a Distinguished Lecture Series, a Gallaudet 150 Symposium, and the Gallaudet Reunion.
For the distinguished lecture series the 5 presenters are:
Andrew Solomon on September 10
Marilyn Smith on October 17
Anindya (Bapin) Bhattacharyya on November 14
Andrew Manning on February 4
Ritchie Bryant on March 6
Watch for announcements and find more information on each presenter on the website:
For the Gallaudet 150 Symposium, the Call for Papers deadline is October 30. The theme for the symposium is "Celebrating the 150 Years of Visionary Leadership" and it will take place on April 9 and 10, 2014.
The Gallaudet Reunion will be held on July 9-13, 2014. During that week we will also celebrate the 125 year anniversary Gallaudet University Alumni Association (GUAA), one of the oldest alumni associations in the USA. Registration is open! Space is limited, so register now.
Hello, my name is Keith Doane. I am a senior here at Gallaudet University majoring in government and minoring in philosophy. A lot is happening this year. On April 8th we host a Charter Day Festival of Learning celebrating the exact date 150 years ago that President Abraham Lincoln signed our charter. During that day the University will have an array of events involving students, departments and programs, including the Unity Fest celebration. In the afternoon, the Gallaudet University Museum will open a new exhibition.
Another exciting part of the sesquicentennial celebration is honoring some of the University's Visionary Leaders. A committee carefully studied multiple nominations and had in-depth discussions leading to the selection of 15 Visionary Leaders to highlight during the year. These leaders have made contributions to various fields including education, American Sign Language studies, international work, and athletics. It is a great honor to be recognized as a visionary leader.
Thank you! This is such an exciting time in the history of Gallaudet University and to be a part of the celebration is extraordinary. For more information, go to our website, www.gallaudet.edu/150.html.
