Difference between ASLPI and Diagnostic Assessment
Question: I took the ASLPI. Is Diagnostic Assessment another “test” of some kind?
Answer: No, Diagnostic Assessment is not a test. The ASLPI is a formal “test.” The ASLPI is video recorded and ASL skills are evaluated as a whole. Examinees are assigned a proficiency level ranging from 0-5 based based on the skills demonstrated during that interview. Suppose you receive a level 2 on the ASLPI. The ASLPI does not provide diagnostic information about your areas needing improvement. What can you do to improve your skills? Schedule a Diagnostic Assessment.
Diagnostic Assessment is also a video recorded process. During the first session, the client is led through a series of tasks which elicit a language sample. The Diagnostician then analyzes the video recorded sample and embeds feedback onto the same DVD. A second session is then scheduled. The Diagnostician and client review the DVD together to discuss strengths, areas needing improvement, and the feedback provided.
At the conclusion of the Diagnostic Assessment, the DVD is provided to the client for long term referencing and continued learning. The client can provide the DVD to an ASL tutor or teacher to help in advancing the client’s language skills.
