Summer Institute
The CAEBER Summer Institute: ASL/English Bilingual Mentor Development Certificate provides 96 hours (over two summers) of training in the theory and methodology of bilingual education using ASL and English as the languages of instruction, including 10 hours of instruction in technology for the classroom, as well as the role and responsibilities of an ASL/English bilingual mentor. Sessions are two weeks in duration (48 hours each session) and typically occur during the last two weeks of June.
Participating schools for the deaf each send two mentors (one deaf, one hearing), and interested colleges/universities send one professor to the 2-week Summer Institute. All participants make a 2-year commitment to the program and are expected to participate in two summer training sessions (Levels 1 & 2 and Levels 3 & 4) of the ASL/English Bilingual Professional Development (AEBPD) program. Using the critical pedagogy process, participants survey and reflect upon current research in bilingual/multi-cultural education and how it applies to deaf education. The Summer Institute training itself is provided at no charge, general topics include:
| Level 1: | The 7 principles of effective language learning (Freeman & Freeman, 1998) within a bilingual environment, |
| Level 2: | Bilingualism and second language acquisition & learning, |
| Level 3: | Bilingual methodology for the classroom, and |
| Level 4: | Assessing the languages of ASL and English, including (English) literacy, and using assessment to guide bilingual instruction. |
