F-1 Program Extension

When you are issued your F-1 status, you are only allowed that status for a limited time. This is called your Duration of Status (D/S). Usually, your duration is as follows:

·  The amount of time you study under a full course load and progress toward a degree at a normal pace

·  Any authorized employment or practical training

·  A 60 day grace period after the completion of your studies to leave the United States

The predicted date for the end of your F-1 status is marked on # 5 on your I-20. If you will not complete your degree or authorized training by the predicted end date then you must file for an F-1 extension. You must file 30 days BEFORE your I-20 expires.   To file for an extension, please bring the following documents to your International Student Advisor:

·  F-1 Program Extension Form

·  Certification of Finances Form

·  Proof of financial capability to pay for a full time course load

·  Form I-20

·  Form I-94

·  Passport

If approved, your International Student Advisor will issue you a new I-20 with your new predicted end date.

Note: Any requests for program extension due to academic probation or suspension will most likely not be authorized.
