General Education Requirements for the Adult Degree Programs
Degree-seeking adult learners must meet the Adult Degree Program (ADP) General Education Requirements (GER).
Any readmitted student who has completed the Gallaudet general education requirements as required at the time of their earlier admission into Gallaudet University will need to meet the ADP GER. The Adult Degree Program General Studies Requirements will only apply to students who will take 100 percent of their courses online.
Bachelor of Arts ADP General Education Requirements
- English (one composition and one literature course) - 6 Credits
- American Sign Language (ASL) - GSR 103 and ASL 301; Learner must take the ASL Placement Test (ASLPT) to determine ASL readiness for GSR 103 - 6 Credits
- Humanities, communication & arts, social sciences, and business - For a more diverse education, students must take at least one course in three out of the four listed categories - 24 Credits
- Natural sciences 3 - 4 Credits
- Mathematics* 3 - 4 Credits
TOTAL 42-44 Credits
Bachelor of Science ADP General Education Requirements (for majors in biology, chemistry, and mathematics)
- English (one composition and one literature course) - 6 Credits
- American Sign Language (ASL)- GSR 103 and ASL 301; learner must take the ASL Placement Test (ASLPT) to determine ASL readiness for GSR 103 - 6 Credits
- Humanities, communication & arts, social sciences, and business - For a more diverse education, students must take at least one course in three out of the four listed categories. 9 Credits

- Natural sciences - 9 - 11 Credits
- Mathematics, including MAT 130 and/or MAT 150 as required by the major* - 9 - 11 Credits

* Major offerings for a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree may specify which science and/or math courses must be taken. Please carefully check major requirements.
For ADP learners who previously adhered to the on campus General Studies Requirement (GSR) curriculum, course equivalencies will be calculated as follows:
- GSR 150 credits will be applied towards the humanities, communication & arts, social sciences, and business requirements.
- GSR 210/211 credits will be split evenly between English Composition and ASL requirements. These courses satisfy the cultural and diversity requirement.
- GSR 220/221 credits will be applied to humanities, communication & arts, social sciences, and business requirements. These courses satisfy the cultural and diversity requirement.
- GSR 230/231 - the first three or four credits will first be applied to natural sciences requirements. The remaining credits will be applied to humanities, communication & arts, social sciences, and business requirements.
- GSR 240/241 credits will be applied to humanities, communication & arts, social sciences, and business requirements.
- GSR 300 - If an adult learner has completed all of the GSR requirements, including the capstone, s/he is waived from all Adult Degree Program general requirements and only needs to focus on major requirements and remaining electives, if any.
