Graphic Standards
The printed materials of an institution play a major role in helping establish its identity with the public. Graphic elements that are clear and used consistently present a unified image and help people recognize an institution.
Gallaudet University's primary graphic identification is based on the consistent and correct use of two visual elements: the Gallaudet Logo and the Gallaudet Seal. Additional identification is achieved through the use of selected typefaces, paper stock, and ink colors, and through standardized designs or formats for related publications.
The Gallaudet Logo
The logo is designed for use in all publications, promotional materials, signs, and product applications—especially those that will be seen by audiences outside Gallaudet University. The logo should appear on all institutional letterheads, envelopes, memoranda, and business cards. It may be used on merchandise such as t-shirts, mugs, jackets, etc. with the approval of University administrators.
The logo can be reproduced small or large, and in a variety of media including silk screen, video display, print, or tapestry.
To preserve the integrity of this identifying symbol, the logo must not be altered or distorted in any way. All reproductions should come from original camera-ready art, which is available to campus personnel from the Office of Reprographic Service or the Office of Communications and Public Relations.
Guidelines for the correct use of the logo are as follows:
- The logo should appear no smaller than 3/18". There are no restrictions on how large the logo may be used, within the bounds of good taste and format.
- The logo should always appear in a clear field. Printing over photography, artwork, or patterns will diminish its readability.
- None of the design elements of the logo should be altered in any way and the logo should not be combined with other design or graphic elements.
- Use of the logo as a decorative element is discouraged.
- On periodicals, the logo should appear on the credit masthead, mailer page, flag, and/or with the return address.
- The logo may be used with official logos from other university programs or outside organizations cooperating with Gallaudet in producing printed materials. Careful design consideration, however, must be given to pieces incorporating two or more graphic elements.
High-resolution versions available
In order to preserve the integrity and ensure the proper use of the logo you must contact the Office of Communications and Public Relations if you need a high-resolution version for print and design purposes.
To request the logo, please fill out the Request Logo Form.
The Gallaudet Seal
The Gallaudet seal may be used only on official University documents or in connection with award presentations or official events. Use of the seal must be approved by the University president.
The seal is the University's least flexible design element. All parts of the seal have been designed as a total unit and must not be altered or distorted in any way. The seal may be used as a positive image or as a reverse image and may be embossed or foil stamped. It should never be used in combination with the Gallaudet logo on the same printed material.
The original seal was created in 1864. It underwent several changes during the years, and when Gallaudet achieved university status in 1986, the seal was again redone, using the Latin words "Universitas Gallaudetensis" and 13 stars representing the original 13 states around its outer ring. The inner circle depicts an open Bible with the word "ephphatha" (which means "be opened") written in Syriac across the pages and fingerspelled around the image. The shield below depicts 13 stars and stripes.

Letterhead
The official Gallaudet letterhead is used as the first page of all off-campus correspondence. Letterhead will be imprinted with the Gallaudet logo, the designated department or division, telephone and fax numbers, and the official address of the University. No individual's name or title will be printed on the stationery. All letterhead is 8.5" x 11".
Envelopes
Business-size #10 envelopes are printed with the Gallaudet logo, the designated department or division, and the official address of the University. Mailing labels and other envelopes (6.5" x 9.5" or 9" x 12") should also carry the logo and the official return address.
Business Cards
Budget unit heads are responsible for determining the need and authorizing the printing of personalized business cards for their staff members.
Standard 2" x 3.5" horizontal format business cards are printed with a name, title, division or department, and phone and fax numbers, e-mail address, or they can be printed just with the division/department and phone number.
Internet addresses can be added to the business card but may need to be added to the second side, depending on the length of your address or the total of telephone numbers/addresses requested. If it is necessary to print a two-sided card, all electronic numbers will appear on he reverse side. There is a small additional charge for two-sided cards.
Certificates
Gallaudet encourages the use of standard 8.5" x 11" certificates framed with the Gallaudet logo for University-sponsored awards. These can be printed in blue or black on white stock or on parchment paper.
Forms
All official forms of the University should carry the Gallaudet logo. Forms may be printed in blue or black ink on white paper. To make reordering easier, Reprographic Services will automatically add an identifying code number to the bottom right corner of the form. Printed forms also may bear your own internal tracking codes. Multiple copy forms are available but require specific design elements to allow them to print correctly.
Font
Many different type styles are available to create particular effects in materials. Minion Pro (serif) and Myriad Pro (san-serif) are the preferred fonts for Gallaudet University printed materials directly related to official institutional programs and activities.
If neither Minion Pro nor Myriad Pro are available, Times New Roman (serif) and Ariel (san-serif) are acceptable substitutes.
Color
The traditional Gallaudet colors of buff and blue remain a supportive identifying element in visual communication. This is reinforced in stationery, formal announcements and invitations, business cards, and other institutional communications.
