Murphy joined the Gallaudet community in December 2010 as the executive director of communications and public relations. She has extensive experience in public and media relations as well as advocacy, including work within the deaf and hard of hearing community. Prior to joining Gallaudet she served as director of communications and public affairs for the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. In that capacity, she managed the association’s print and electronic publications, website content and marketing initiatives, as well as represented the association with the media, members of Congress, and congressional staff.
Murphy has served on a variety of deaf and hard of hearing advocacy coalitions including as co-chair of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Alliance (DHHA). The DHHA is a coalition of 14 national organizations that work on issues of concern to the deaf and hard of hearing community, such as communications access, education, and early hearing detection and intervention.
Murphy has also worked in public and media relations in the telecommunications and energy industries. She began her career in California where she worked on political campaigns for candidates for the California legislature and Mayor of San Francisco. She has a B.A. in communications from The Ohio State University and an M.B.A. from Marymount University in Arlington, Va.
Catherine's brother is deaf and a former Gallaudet student.
