Helen Adams Keller (June 27, 1880-June 1, 1968) was an American author, political activist and lecturer. She was the first deafblind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree and in 1964 President Lyndon B. Johnson awarded her the distinguished Presidential Medal of Freedom. The story of her life, particularly of her relationship with teacher and companion Anne Sullivan, has been the subject of numerous books, plays, documentaries, TV movies and feature films including the Oscar-winning The Miracle Worker staring Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke in 1962. Her image was depicted on the Alabama state quarter minted in 2003.
