Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday") or Shrove Tuesday, is the last day of feasting before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday.
Traditionally the Carnival celebration starts on January 6, the Twelfth Night (feast of Epiphany); and picks up speed until midnight on Mardi Gras, the day before Ash Wednesday.
The celebration in the United States is associated with parties, colorful beads, King cake and the colors purple, green and gold. New Orleans, Louisiana is famous for it's legendary Mardi Gras celebrations.
