Gallaudet University was named for Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, a pioneer in American deaf education and the founder of the American School for the Deaf in Hartford, Connecticut. Gallaudet was born on December 10, 1787 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was father to University founder Edward Miner Gallaudet and married to Sophia Fowler. He died at his home in Connecticut on September 10, 1851.
