Short Biography

Dr. CarieLyn Palmer has worked in the field of deafness since 1980. She has taught at the elementary, middle-school, and college level. She has also taught in the teacher-training program in Gallaudet University's Graduate School. Dr. Palmer has supervised student teachers and run teaching seminars. In addition, Dr. Palmer has offered a variety of workshops related to reading and deafness throughout the United States.

Dr. Palmer is an Associate Professor in the Department of English. Her focus of instruction is on Freshmen who are taking non-credit English courses. In addition, Dr. Palmer works closely with and supports the Student Success Program and the First Year Experience Program.

In 2004, Dr. Palmer successfully defended her dissertation entitled, An Examination of Metacognitive Strategies Used by Skilled Deaf Reader: A Think Aloud Protocol Analysis. It is Dr. Palmer's hope that these effective strategies can be incorporated into pre-service, in-service and higher education reading programs for deaf and hard of hearing readers.
