Kevin Cole is a Research Applications Programmer for the Gallaudet Research Institute. His work involves designing programs that provide normative data from Stanford Achievement Test results, designing new software interfaces to specialized hardware, writing technical documentation and providing support to researchers both within the institute and elsewhere on campus. He maintains the institute's web site and mailing lists as well.
Current projects include:
- Implementing and testing Access Grid a free, open source, high definition video conferencing system, and spin-offs developed from it in collaboration with RIT
- Developing user interfaces for human subjects involved in audio experiments, using Kyma.
- Learning and working with the Brüel and Kjær PULSE signal analyzer, and corresponding software applications.
- Implementing, teaching and evaluating Lime Survey, a free, open-source alternative to proprietary, web-based survey systems.
He is also the Washington DC Ubuntu LoCo team contact as well as one of the principals behind the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) Learning Club DC.
The LoCo has placed computers running Ubuntu Linux in local libraries, subsidized housing projects, schools, and community non-profit agencies involved in political activism. They are currently establishing relationships with local businesses, enabling them to support Ubuntu.
The OLPC Learning Club has helped distribute XO laptops in Africa as well as providing a local Lending Library for learning about the XO laptop. The OLPC Learning Club meets every other month at Gallaudet.
He has taught Web Design and produced a number of written tutorials on a variety of computer-related topics. He served as one of the editors of the Edubuntu Cookbook and Class Acts (Draft).
