Professor Wood taught in Deaf mainstream programs in the Dade County Public Schools in Miami before teaching middle school at the Indiana School for the Deaf in the 1980's. She's taught both hearing and Deaf graduate and undergraduate students in a variety of ESL, linguistics, education, and English departments. She's been in the English department at Gallaudet University since the fall of 1989, where she has taught writing, teacher preparation courses, and linguistics courses. She has published and/or done scholarly work in the areas of language and gender, politics of language education, critical literacy, and learning assessment. She is currently a Gallaudet Deans' Faculty Fellow for Learning Assessment and is one of the Coordinators in the General Studies Program. Even though she is a Hoosier ISD Oriole at heart, she has strong ties to the Maryland School for the Deaf, where her two children are Oriole students.
