Student Profiles

An Interview with Luba Douziech
Where are you from?
I am from Edmonton, the capital city of Alberta in the beautiful Canadian Rocky Mountains.
Why did you pick Gallaudet?
Gallaudet was not initially on my list, but I decided to apply at the end of my senior year. Since Gallaudet is known as the world’s only deaf university that provides a Liberal Arts education, I thought why not explore it and study abroad. It’s the best choice I’ve made.
Which GSR class did you take most recently?
GSR 150 – Advocacy Design with Dr. Carolyn McCaskill and Professor Amy Stevens
What kind of activities did you participate in? Field trips? Guest lecturers?
For this class, we had various guest speakers discuss the marketing and branding of deaf clubs and organizations. For example, Dr. Jane Norman gave a presentation on Virginia’s Association for the Deaf and gave us marketing and design ideas on how to develop a brochure.
We also visited the National Association of the Deaf for a tour and presentation on its history and marketing objectives. We were presented with their mission and vision statements so we could better understand the agency in our efforts to design a brochure.
What type of projects did you do for class?
We designed a brochure for the National Association of the Deaf and gave a formal presentation of our designs to its executive director and its executive secretary. The class also had to research and write a synthesis paper related to the branding strategies of different companies.

What did you learn from the class?
I recall the very first day when I landed my hands on a MAC computer and its keyboard; I was doomed! I didn’t even know how to turn on the MAC computer and I was pretty much clueless how the system runs. I am more fluent using PC. I knew I was going to fail this class hands down. I struggled every class with the MAC but finally made it through with the assistance of my professors. Now, I am considering becoming a proud owner of a MAC laptop!
What were some of your favorite experiences from the class?
My favorite experience from this class was how much I learned using the MAC. I spent hours after class working with InDesign to finish my homework. Today, I am able to pull it off without referring to the textbook for help!
