The genetics program at Gallaudet University has provided genetic evaluation and counseling services to members of the Deaf community and other deaf and hard of hearing people for more than 20 years.
Research at the genetics program focuses on identifying genes that are involved in deafness and understanding the impact that advances in genetic technology have on the Deaf and hearing communities.
Education is an important component of the genetics program. We aim to empower members of the Deaf and hearing communities through education and awareness. We also emphasize education for health care professionals through various continuing education programs. We are currently offering an online course in genetics for early hearing detection and intervention professionals. In the past, we worked to educate future audiologists through a summer training program for audiology faculty.
