Teaching Fellow

Program Description

The Teaching Fellows Program has been established to attract individuals who want to become teachers at the early childhood, elementary or content area levels. The components of this program focus on the recruitment, selection, training and professional development of individuals who will teach at one of the Clerc Center's two demonstration schools (Kendall Demonstration Elementary School - KDES or the Model Secondary School for the Deaf - MSSD).

All individuals selected to participate in this program must have a Bachelor's degree in the content area, Deaf Education or Education, minimal teaching experience and make a four-year commitment to obtain a Master's degree in the content area, Deaf Education or Education within this time (or additional training in the content area if the Fellow already possesses a Master's degree). During the employment at the Clerc Center, Fellows participants will receive mentoring support, on-site training and tuition assistance towards completion of a graduate degree or further training.

After completing the Fellows Program, Fellows are expected to teach at KDES or MSSD for a minimum of two full academic years. During these two years, performance ratings have to be at an acceptable level, according to the Teacher Evaluation System, for probationary or continuing appointment teachers.

Recruitment

The goal of the Teaching Fellows Program is to increase the number of teachers at the Clerc Center in those disciplines that traditionally have had limited numbers of underserved and underrepresented individuals. This program will actively recruit graduates from Gallaudet University. However, consideration will be given to applicants from other colleges. Deaf and hard of hearing individuals from traditionally underserved and underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Selection

Requirements: Fellows applicants must…

• Possess a Bachelor's degree in the content area, Deaf Education or Education
• Have minimal teaching experience
• Be enrolled or eligible to enroll in a graduate program in the content area, Deaf Education or Education at any greater Washington D.C. area university or college that is accredited
• Clerc Center teachers are required to be licensed to teach in Washington DC; therefore, Teaching Fellows will have specific deadlines to obtain licensure (based on a review of your current status)

Gallaudet University Application Form (DOC)

Once the documents are received, they will be reviewed by a committee. The committee will select applicants to be interviewed. The interview process will consist of a formal interview with the committee, role-play a 15-minute lesson in a mock classroom (interview committee members will "act" like the teacher's students) and take a 30-minute (timed) writing test (testing for English writing ability). The number of Fellows selected to participate in this program will be determined annually and will be based on funding and resignations received.

Training

Fellows will receive support in a variety of ways to ensure professional growth as teachers:

• Fellows will teach in the Extended School Year (ESY) Program each summer while in the Fellows Program at the school where they are assigned to teach, unless enrolled in graduate coursework during this time period. Fellows will receive separate compensation for this work.
• Fellows will be assigned a mentor to provide support and guidance.
• Fellows will attend the New Teacher and Staff Orientation Program (late August of the first year) if it is on the schedule prior to the start of the first day of work. Fellows will be paid to attend the orientation separately from their salary if it occurs prior to the first day of work.

Professional Development

Fellows must enroll in a graduate program and complete a Master's degree in the content area, Deaf Education or Education (or additional training in the content area if the Fellow already possesses a Master's degree) within a four-year period.

The University reimburses eligible employees (Fellows) for each course during an academic year up to the amount of Gallaudet University's Board-approved, full-time, United States student undergraduate tuition for the same academic year. No eligible employee may receive more than four times Gallaudet's current academic year undergraduate tuition during their employment and no employee may receive more than the actual expenses covered under this policy. Educational assistance is prorated for part-time employees according to the number of hours or percentage of time normally scheduled to be worked at the time of application.

Eligible Fellows enrolled in classes at Gallaudet University will receive a tuition waiver at Gallaudet for approved coursework, including American Sign Language, provided the Fellow meets the admission requirements and is accepted and providing, following admission of tuition-paying students, there is available space within the class. Tuition and mandatory fees (those required of all students at the time of registration) only are waived.

Salary

Fellows will be paid on the appropriate track of the Clerc Center Teacher's Pay Schedule. Fellows will also receive the same benefits as other regular status, full-time teachers. Additional compensation for teaching in the Extended School Year (ESY) Program will be paid to participating Fellows. Fellows applicants selected for teaching jobs are required to undergo and pay for a suitability background investigation.

Requirements if Hired

• Fellows agree to submit a copy of proof of application into a Master's degree program to the Fellow's supervisor and Principal before October 1st (after a hire date of August 16th); further, Fellows will also provide proof of acceptance into the Master's degree program upon receipt and no later than the end of January (after a hire date of August 16th)
• Fellows agree to submit a plan of study (the Fellow's Plan for Taking Courses form) to their supervisor and to their Principal at the beginning of each semester (no later than October 1st for first semester and no later than January 31st for 2nd semester) to ensure timely completion of the Master's degree. Fellows will turn in a copy of their grade report each semester - no later than 10 days after grades are issued.
• The Fellows appointment is contingent upon the results of two reviews each academic year (to be held no later than November 1st and February 1st) of their teaching ability and of their progress towards obtaining their Master's degree.
• Fellows must earn passing scores set by the District of Columbia for the Praxis I tests in reading, writing and mathematics by the end of the first year
• Clerc Center teachers are required to be licensed to teach in Washington DC; therefore, Teaching Fellows will have specific deadlines to obtain DC licensure (based on a review of their current status)
• After obtaining their Master's degree, Fellows are expected to teach at the Clerc Center school (KDES or MSSD) for a minimum of two full academic years. During these two years, the performance ratings have to be at an acceptable level, according to the Teacher Evaluation System, for probationary or continuing appointment teachers.

KDES Early Childhood Education Team

KDES Team 1-2-3 and Team 4-5

KDES Team 6-7-8 and all MSSD Departments (content areas are mainly English, Science, Social Studies Mathematics, Art, Physical Education and Computer Applications/Yearbook)

• If applying for jobs in the two schools in the specific content areas listed through the Teaching Fellows Program, Fellows must earn passing scores set by the District of Columbia for Praxis I tests in reading, writing and mathematics by the end of the first year; Clerc Center teachers are required to be licensed to teach in Washington DC; therefore, Teaching Fellows will have specific deadlines to obtain DC licensure (based on a review of their current status)

Failure to comply with the requirements of the
Fellows job could result in termination.
