General Information: The Program of General Studies seeks a full-time director. The position is open to all tenured Gallaudet faculty members with a terminal degree. The appointment is for a five-year term and is renewable. Appointment date: January 16, 2013.
Summary: The Director of the Program of General Studies provides the administrative leadership in the implementation of the General Studies curriculum and the assessment of the university-wide Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) within the General Studies course offerings. The director collaborates with University administrators, department chairs, faculty members, and staff members to ensure the effectiveness of the General Studies Program.
Qualifications:
Tenured Gallaudet faculty member with a terminal degree and a record of excellence in teaching, research, and service activities; evidence of extensive knowledge, experience, and training with the existing General Studies curriculum and a commitment to further developing and refining the General Studies curriculum; demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with University administrators, department chairs, program directors, program coordinators, faculty and staff members; involvement in national conferences for the purposes of adding to personal knowledge of General Studies issues and informing other colleges and universities of the University's General Studies program; strong writing and ASL skills; the ability to facilitate meetings of campus personnel involved in the development and delivery of General Studies courses.
Responsibilities:
Administrative and curriculum leadership of the Program of General Studies and the First Year Experience; collaborates with academic deans, department chairs, program directors, faculty members, and staff members to ensure that student learning outcomes are met in General Studies courses and that General Studies courses are adequately provided to meet the advancement and promotion needs of enrolled students in a timely manner; collaborates with General Studies coordinators, academic departments and faculty members in the development of integrated courses for the General Studies curriculum; provides guidance for best practices for General Studies course development and program assessment; serves as the referral source for prospective and enrolled students and their parents and families regarding questions related to the General Studies curriculum; develops and maintains a database of General Studies course offerings including disciplines and instructors involved in those courses; collaborates with program coordinators to ensure ongoing assessment of all General Studies offerings; provides annual written reports of General Studies initiatives and their effectiveness; required to teach at least one General Studies course per academic year.
