Full-time Temporary (FTT) Faculty Position

Position contingent on funding
The Department of ASL & Deaf Studies within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Gallaudet University invites applications for one full-time temporary faculty position with the ASL component of the ASL and Deaf Studies Department beginning Winter 2012.
Qualifications:
1. Has experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching pedagogy in the ASL field required.
2. Strong preference will be given to applicants who have completed a Ph.D. or other terminal degree in ASL, Applied Linguistics, First/Second Language Teaching, or closely related fields.
3. Applicants who have completed significant work towards a terminal degree but who have not yet completed the degree may be considered.
4. To be considered for the positions, applicants must have at least a master's degree from an accredited university in a closely related field.
5. A minimum of 3 years of full-time collegiate/university teaching experience (or equivalent) preferred. Experience teaching college Deaf students a plus.
6. Preference is given towards applicants with training in specialty areas and for teaching competency in areas that complement current faculty specialties as a part of an interdisciplinary program in ASL including applied linguistics, pedagogy and literature.
7. Has extensive knowledge of the linguistic structure of ASL and English.
8. Has knowledge & experience working with individuals with diverse educational, language and cultural backgrounds.
9. Ability to work well as an active, contributing member of a department as well as ability to work independently and demonstrate self-reliance and self-initiative.
10. Ability to use various software programs for teaching & research, and is technology literate. Experience teaching online courses a plus.
11. Native or native-like fluency in American Sign Language and be fluent in written English. Submit evidence of American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) proficiency level of 4 or better to be interviewed for this position.
12. Intimate and extensive Deaf-World experience required.
13. Candidates with ASLTA certification strongly preferred.
Responsibilities:
1. Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses face-to-face, hybrid and online with the ASL as a Second Language program; or ASL undergraduate major program.
2. Participate in department and program meetings.
Compensation:
Rank and salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Appointment will be for the regular nine-month academic year.
