Interference in Hearing Aids from Digital Wireless Telephones

Gallaudet University is conducting a study to evaluate interference in hearing aids from digital cellular telephones. Hearing aid users may experience a "buzzing sound" when using a wireless phone which is caused by electromagnetic interference. Interference can have a range of adverse effects on the ability of the hearing aid wearer to use a wireless phone. Due to interference, hearing aid wearers may experience annoyance, reduced speech understanding or, in extreme cases, inability to use a wireless phone.
- be between the ages of 21-70 years of age
- be daily hearing aid users
- have used hearing aid(s) for at least 6 months
- use the telephone regularly for most calls(rather than text or video)
Compensation: $12 per hour
Location: Gallaudet University, Mary Thornberry Building
Duration: Up to 4 hours scheduled at your convenience
If you participate, you will be asked to:
- Complete an audiologic evaluation Complete a questionnaire
- Sit for a hearing aid fitting
- Listen to speech and a variety of interfering noises
- Adjust and make ratings of speech and noise levels, and
- Repeat back sentences
This study has been approved by the Gallaudet University's Institutional Review Board. Participants' identities and results are kept confidential. The research is supported by the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Hearing Enhancement (RERC-HE) and funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), an agency of the United States Department of Education (DOE). The RERC-HE is housed in the Department of Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences in the Mary Thornberry Building on the Gallaudet Campus.
