Gallaudet University is conducting research on the role of self-hearing in speech production and how hearing loss affects it. Participants will be asked to speak and evaluate loudness of their voice. This study will provide new information on the speech loudness perception when speaking versus listening to others. It will also help us understand how signal processing characteristics employed by digital hearing aids and cochlear implants may affect self-hearing and users' satisfaction with such devices.

For this study, participants will:

Sit in a quiet sound-proof room
Repeat syllables at your comfortable speaking level, and listen to your voice as you speak
Compare the relative loudness of their voice when speaking to the loudness of a recording of their voice.

Compensation: $12 per hour

Location: Gallaudet University, Mary Thornberry Building

Duration: Three, one-hour sessions on three separate days

This study has been approved by the Gallaudet University's Institutional Review Board. Participants' identities and results are kept confidential. The research is supported by the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Hearing Enhancement (RERC-HE) and funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), an agency of the United States Department of Education (DOE). The RERC-HE is housed in the Department of Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences in the Mary Thornberry Building on the Gallaudet Campus.
