Bridge to Honors

Purpose

After the Honors interview is completed, some students may also be placed in Bridge to Honors.  This is a program in which students who would benefit from an additional semester to adjust to college or to develop skills are clustered together in an accelerated GSR 102 course.  Students are also enrolled in the Honors section of GSR 101.   Students may be considered for Honors from Bridge with recommendations from two first semester professors and an in person interview; sometimes the student may also submit a writing sample. Any student currently enrolled in the University also may apply to Honors following these requirements and a required submission of a writing sample. Students admitted to the Bridge to Honors Program are expected and required to participate fully in the summer discussion board, the Honors Retreat, and Honors activities throughout the semester.

Summary

Students who are admitted to the Bridge to Honors Program have the full rights and privileges of Honors students during their first semester at Gallaudet University, including access to the Honors Lounge.  Students admitted to this program are placed in an accelerated English course with an experienced Honors professor.  The professor will monitor a student's work throughout the semester and make a recommendation to the Honors Program regarding a student's suitability to Honors.

Reasons for Placement

Students are placed in the Bridge to Honors Program if program faculty feel that a student is not quite ready for Honors.   The reasons for a Bridge Placement vary.  Some students are placed into Bridge when their ACT scores don't quite meet the Honors requirements, but the student demonstrates high motivation and intellectualism.  A student may also be placed if his/her previous educational experience may not have given that student a challenge similar to what they will encounter in our Honors curriculum.  Last, students will be placed in Bridge if we feel a student will benefit from a semester of adjusting to college.  For example, to give a student time to adjust socially or to give a student time to improve their signing skills, or to give a student time to become familiar with the expectations of college.

Scholarships

Students who are admitted to the Bridge to Honors Program do not receive the Honors scholarship while they are in Bridge.  If a student is accepted from Bridge to Honors at the end of the fall semester, a student will begin receiving the Honors scholarship during that spring semester.
