Course Registration
Freshmen
Students who are admitted to either Honors or Bridge and enter GU as freshmen will take two courses taught by experienced Honors instructors: GSR 101 and GSR 102.
GSR 101H is a First Year Seminar course that helps students adjust to life in college and away from home. In Honors, this course goes a step further by helping students develop and internalize the tools they need to self-regulate their decision making process in college and beyond. Honors courses cover the traditional material of FYS, as well as studying goal-setting theories (and related topics). The Honors FYS course is also a ‘lab' course, in which students complete assignments earlier than in traditional classes so that students already have experience completing college-level Honors assignments before they have their first assignments due in content courses. Students who are admitted to both Honors and Bridge are enrolled in GSR 101H unless waived.
GSR 102H is an English course that develops student's critical thinking, critical reading, and writing skills in their first semester. This course features lively class participation, as well as enjoyable and challenging assignments. Students will explore bildungsroman (or growing up/coming-of-age) stories. This class explores in a more academic literary frame many of the concepts essential to ensuring successful student transition form high school to college. Students enrolled in Honors enroll in GSR 102H unless waived. Students who are admitted to Bridge take a GSR 102A section taught by the same Honors instructor. Students in Bridge may choose to complete Honors level work to demonstrate their abilities and motivation.
Transfer Students and Current GU Students
Transfer and current GU students who are admitted to Honors generally begin their careers in Honors by taking an Honors Contract course. This course allows students to tailor their Honors learning to the interest and skills expected in upper level students. Students are encouraged to use this course to begin exploring and vetting ideas for a possible Capstone project. Students may, if offered during the first semester, substitute an Honors Contract course with an Honors Seminar (HON 495) course.
