Honors Summer Reading
Every year the Honors faculty select a couple of books for the Honors community to read during the summer months. Because we are spread out all over the country, we invite current and incoming students to participate in the summer discussion board, where we discuss the selected readings. (Please note that participation in the discussion board is required for newly admitted students.) This is an excellent way for us to begin building an Honors community, as well as to begin the transition for students to Honors-level expectations. Honors students are expected to be thoughtful and diligent in their work, as well as submitting work in a timely fashion with a professional appearance. These expectations not only make one's academic career more enjoyable, they prepare students for the daily expectations of life after graduation.
Students will be able to participate in both the social and academic discussion forums. In the social forums, students are able to meet each other, exchange contact information, and share a little about themselves in a centralized locations. Students very often continue these discussions elsewhere on social media sites of their choosing. Faculty will also post some information about themselves in this forum, giving students a chance to see the human side of their faculty instructors before classes begin. In the academic forums, students will compose and respond to several prompts about the readings. The quality and quantity of students' participation is measured in a rubric that is posted when the discussion board opens. The discussion board has proved to be a vital instrument of student success in the past, and we look forward to continuing to develop and train future scholars and leaders.
The readings are announced in May every year. The summer discussion board will begin on July 15th, 2013 and will conclude on August 2nd.
