Gallaudet University provides some students with the opportunity to design a Self-Directed Major if their academic interests cannot be met by existing programs. The Self-Directed Major is a rigorous alternative to traditional major declaration that allows students to work with members of the faculty to design a major that will take a minimum of three semesters to complete. The Self-Directed Major is more academically demanding than traditional majors, because students assume sole responsibility for completing all forms, planning the course sequence, and enrolling in a variety of high-level classes across disciplines within the University. Because of this, the Self-Directed Major is for the most self-motivated and academically capable students with clear educational and career goals.
We invite students who are considering a Self-Directed Major to browse the information in the tabs on the side of your screen. If you feel qualified for a Self-Directed Major, and believe that such a major will achieve your academic needs, please contact sharon.pajka@gallaudet.edu to schedule an appointment.
