The entire Gallaudet University community is coming together in compassion and support following the devastating earthquakes and tsunami in Japan. The extent of the disaster is vast and will require long-term support from around the world. We extend our most sincere condolences to those affected by this event and the continuing uncertainty.
We have a large of group Japanese students on our campus, and a large group of alumni in Japan and one in Brazil. We will do all that we can to be supportive and understanding of their needs during this very difficult time. Our Japanese students are leading the Japan-Gallaudet University support and outreach efforts to the deaf affected by this cataclysmal event.
Under the guidance of our Japanese students, there will be a variety of activities organized this week and following weeks to raise awareness and solicited for assistance. As we gather more information about these activities, we will communicate them directly to the community through the university Web site and the Gallaudet University Daily Digest.
You can view updates from the Japanese Federation for the Deaf in ASL on the International Relations website.
History has shown that times like these always bring out the best in our Gallaudet community. We are certain that Gallaudet University will rise to the occasion to offer support and relief in appropriate ways.
May healing and safety commence for our brothers and sisters in Japan.
