Name: Daqian Dang Country: China Field of Study: Mathematics |
My name is Daqian Dang and I am a citizen of China. I was born in Shanghai, which is located in the eastern part of China. I came to Gallaudet University in fall 2008, and I studied at the English Language Institution to improve my English skills and learn American Sign Language. Currently, I am studying Mathematics, and I expect to graduate in May 2013. I plan to seek a graduate degree in Mathematics or Deaf Education in the future.
My goal is to become a math teacher and provide help and support for the deaf community when I go back to China. Because Chinese deaf people are still suffering discrimination from the dominant social groups, I want to become a deaf leader in China. I want to help Chinese deaf people build a communication bridge between themselves and the American deaf community to increase knowledge about culture and sign language.
The Sasakawa Scholarship through the Nippon Foundation is helping me to pursue furthering my education and continuing my studies at Gallaudet University. I thank the scholarship program for assisting me in achieving my dream to work towards developing the deaf community in China, and educating deaf people to be well-rounded, democratic, open-minded and academically successful.
