Biographical Sketch

Isaac Lewis Peet, born in 1824 in Hartford, Connecticut, was the son of Harvey Prindle and Margaret Lewis Peet. He grew up at the New York Institution for the Deaf, during the time his father was principal. He was active in the Deaf community from his infancy to his death. After graduating with honors from Yale College in 1845, he immediately took up the work of teaching the Deaf at the New York Institution for the Deaf. He served continuously as instructor, vice principal, principal, and principal emeritus. He succeeded his father as active head of the school 'in 1867 and was its chief executive until 1892, when he retired. He was a writer of numerous articles on the instruction of the Deaf, mostly published in the American Annals of the Deaf. Isaac L. Peet married Miss Mary Toles, former pupil of his in 1854 and raised a family of four children. Their only daughter Elizabeth Peet, was a professor on the faculty of Gallaudet College. Isaac L. Peet died in 1898 completing a lifetime of service to, and association with the Deaf.

Scope and Content

The Isaac Lewis Peet Collection consists of his personal and educational materials. The Collection contains approximately 850 items dating from the 1830's to 1899. The majority of the papers date from 1830's and 1890's. The bulk of the collection consists of educational essays. In the collection, including his address delivered at the Yale College in 1845, correspondence from Cyrus W. Field and Rev. Thomas Gallaudet. There is a diary from Isaac L. Peet's travel through Europe in 1851. During his education in a private school in New York, he wrote many essays, mostly dated from the 1830's. In this collection, you can find an article about Isaac L. Peet and the New York Institution for the Deaf from the magazine The Christian Herald and Signs of Our Times from 1890. Also, included in Isaac L. Peet's manuscript, is a history of the New York Institution for the Deaf from 1816 to 1893.

Isaac L. Peet wrote two handwritten sermons, given as instruction in religion. Finally, the Peet collection includes a signed autograph book by his classmates from his Class of 1845 at Yale College.
