Historical Sketch 

The American Association to the Promote the Teaching of Speech of the Deaf was founded in 1890 at the Convention of American Instructors of the Deaf held in New York by Alexander Graham Bell.

The American Association to Promote the Teaching of Speech of the Deaf with Fiftieth Anniversary in June 17-21, 1940 at the Rhode Island School for the Deaf.

The Association has been changed its name in 1948 to Volta Speech Association for the Deaf. In 1953, Volta Speech Association for the deaf has been changed to the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf. In 1990, the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf celebrated its centennial.

Scope and Content

This collection of records from the American Association to Promote the Teaching of Speech to the Deaf, contains files on persons applying for teaching certificates. The Volta Bureau, under the direction of the Association, issued three types of certificates to qualified persons:
1] the Collegiate Registration
2] the Certified Registration
3] the Standard Registration

The files in this collection contain application forms for specified certificates, correspondence between the applicant and the Volta Bureau, credentials, and transcripts concerning the applicant.

The collection is arranged alphabetically by the applicant's name and it contains 146 folders in 6 boxes and approximate number of items: 5,100 The materials are dated from 1929 - 1935, with bulk dates between 1931 - 1933.
