Historical Sketch

The Virginia Association of the Deaf was formed during the first meeting that was held in the old chapel of the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind in Staunton, Virginia, on June 11, 1884. John Walter Michaels, a deaf leader, was the founder and Rev. Job Turner, a deaf missionary, was the first president of the Virginia Association of the Deaf. Scope and Content

The collection of the Virginia Association of the Deaf consists of approximately 8,500 pages of correspondence, minutes, constitution and by-laws, financial reports, program books, brochures, directories, certificates, flyers, newspaper clippings, and photographs. The bulk of the collection dates from 1912 to 2001. The largest collections are correspondence files which span the years between 1934 and 1993 concerning the affairs of the organization. The collection contains newspaper clippings concerning the controversy of the selection of a superintendent of the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind. Also included in this collection are the files of the Virginia Council for the Deaf and the Auld Lang Syne Alumni Association of the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind.

Series 1: Association Files

Box 1 (Folder 1) - Box 3 (Folder 16) 1912 - 2001
In this series are minutes from Board and general meetings, program books for the Virginia Association of the Deaf conventions, as well as the Miss Deaf Virginia Pageant.

Series 2: Office and General Files

Box 3 (Folder 17) - Box 7 (Folder 16) 1934 - 2001
Included in this group are incoming and outgoing letters written by the presidents of the association, as well as the officers. There are reports of the committees. Included are the files of the constitutions and by-laws and financial reports. Convention materials are included.

Series 3: General Files and Photographs

Box 7 (Folder 17) - Box 10 (Folder 22) 1919 - 2001
Within this series are newspaper clippings, addresses given by the presidents of the association, Alumni Association of the Auld Lang Syne (School for the Deaf), periodicals, legislative bills related to the school for the deaf and the blind, letters related to the controversy of the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind, also related to the National Association of the Deaf and Northern Virginia Association of the Deaf. Virginia Council for the Deaf is included in this collection. Two envelopes of photographs are included.
