On April 13th, 2009, during the demolition of the Mary Thornberry Building a time capsule was found behind the building's cornerstone. Inside were issues of the "Buff and Blue" and other Gallaudet publications, articles related to hearing and speech from the 1950s, a gold-plated hearing aid, and a photograph of the Speech and Audiology Department. The time capusle was sealed in 1958 and was an amazing discovery here on Kendall Green.

The Archives is undergoing a six-month long project of digitizing its deaf rare books collection. Thanks to a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and Northplains Systems we have been able to rent a very sophisiticated scanner from Kirtas Technologies. An entire book can be digitized in approximately 15 minutes! Our goal is to have 150 books digitized.
