National Survey of Student Engagement and Faculty Survey of Student Engagement
Gallaudet University participates in both the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE)
National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)
The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) conducts an annual survey of freshmen and seniors at hundreds of colleges and universities all over the country. Since 1999, more than 1,400 undergraduate degree granting colleges and universities have used the NSSE to collect information about student participation in educational programs and campus activities.
We use NSSE:
- To participate in a national effort to improve undergraduate quality
- To use a research-based, psychometrically sound tool
- To compare performance against peer institutions
- To examine patterns of strengths and weaknesses within Gallaudet, across time, and across different student groups
- To guide and monitor institutional improvement
- To incorporate student engagement results in self-studies, accreditation, and accountability
Research shows that higher student engagement in students' education leads to greater student achievement, persistence, and graduation.
The NSSE survey focuses on five benchmarks:

Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE)
The Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE) was designed to complement the NSSE and focuses on:
- Faculty perceptions of how often students engage in different activities.
- The importance faculty place on various areas of learning and development.
- The nature and frequency of faculty-student interactions.
- How faculty members organize their time, both in and out of the classroom.
FSSE encourages faculty to consider teaching & learning by:
- Providing timely, formative assessment & feedback vital to maximize students' learning
- Providing peer evaluation that enhances responsibility to students' study and/or work group & self assessment
- Modeling the importance of giving and using feedback by asking students about the helpfulness of faculty's feedback and explaining how faculty are using students' ideas to improve their own teaching
Importance of Prompt Feedback for First Year (FY) Students:
- Most useful feedback is timely and allows students to use information to improve their performance
- FY students need immediate feedback to understand what is expected
- FY need feedback in first 3 weeks to modify their behaviors accordingly
- Pre-university study habits, and those developed in first couple months amazingly persistent throughout their college career
