What we provide:
Extension Courses
The GURCs offer courses for deaf and hard of hearing people, their families and professionals who work with them. Courses provide opportunities to study with recognized experts in such fields as American Sign Language Linguistics, Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, Interpreting, and leadership development.
These courses are provided through the GURCs, often in collaboration with sponsoring agencies serving deaf and hearing communities. Schools for deaf students, special education school districts, interpreter training programs, or professional organizations can be sponsoring agencies.
Workshops
Specialized workshops focusing on literacy, family involvement, and transition from school to postsecondary education and employment are also offered through the GURCs. Additional workshops can also be arranged to address a particular training need.
Technical Assistance
The GURCs offer assistance to schools, programs and agencies interested in providing workshops, extension courses and other specialized trainings. They also provide information related to the education of deaf and hard of hearing students in their region from preschool through adulthood.
GURC staff members act in an advisory capacity at their host institutions. They are also involved with professional and consumer organizations and serve on advisory boards for agencies and organizations which have an impact on services to deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
Academic Bowl
Every spring, Gallaudet University hosts the National Academic Bowl for Deaf and Hard of Hearing High School students. At the competition, teams representing schools and programs for deaf and hard of hearing students compete against each other to answer questions on a wide variety of academic subjects. All high schools and programs serving deaf and hard of hearing students are encouraged to form a team and participate in this exciting Academic Bowl competition. For more information, see Academic Bowl for Deaf and Hard of Hearing High School Students.
Schools and programs should contact their specific GURC for more information.
