Outcomes

The Department of Physical Education and Recreation plays an important role in helping students meet the five major competencies of :

• Ethics and Social Responsibility

Physical Education and Recreation Major Program Student Learning Outcomes:

Students will:
1. Attain and maintain physical fitness and overall wellness.
2. Apply academic concepts of the professional discipline to promote healthy
lifestyles through physical activity, fitness, wellness, and sports.
3. Effectively assess physical fitness and wellness.
4. Apply principles, analytical methods, and best practices for designing,
implementing, and evaluating health promoting activity and programs.
5. Demonstrate personal behaviors that exemplify professionalism.

Physical Education teachers identify and demonstrate physical education content and disciplinary concepts related to the development of a physically educated person.

• Physical Education teachers understand how individuals learn and develop and can provide opportunities that support their physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development.
• Physical Education teachers use an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a safe learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning and self-motivation.
• Physical Education teachers use effective verbal, nonverbal and media communication techniques to enhance learning and engagement in physical activity settings.
• Physical Education teachers plan and implement a variety of developmentally appropriate instructional strategies to develop physically educated individuals, based on state and national (NASPE K-12) standards.
• Physical Education teachers use assessment to foster physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development of students in physical activity.
• Physical Education teachers use information technology to enhance personal and professional productivity.

Careers

Students who have received degrees are:

• Teaching Physical Education in the public school system at an Elementary School
• Teaching Physical Education in the public school system at a Middle School
• Teaching Physical Education (ranging from K - 12th grades) in residential schools for the deaf
• Teaching Adapted Physical Education in a public school

Physical Education majors have gotten jobs in the areas of:

• Elementary PE teachers, middle and secondary school teachers, teacher's aides
• Fitness leaders in school and corporate environments
• Activity leaders in school, residential school, community recreation and camp environments, and as coaches, and sports officials
