Physical Education and Recreation Activity Program
Mission
The Physical Education and Recreation (PER) General Studies Activity Program is an essential component of a liberal arts education. The program is designed to provide students with opportunities for participation in a Wellness course or participation in quality movement and fitness experiences through a variety of activities including aquatics, dance, fitness, outdoor challenge and recreational activities, and traditional sports.
Participation in regular physical activity is critical for the development and maintenance of good health, and to foster an understanding of the importance of and consequences of making healthy lifestyle choices. The goal of a Physical Education and Recreation Activity Program as stated by the National Association of Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) is "to develop physically educated individuals who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity".
Physical Education and Recreation Activities offered include: Weight Training, Jogging, Rock Climbing, Pickleball, Tennis, Volleyball, Discovery, Badminton, Aerobics, Pilates, and Dance. Different activities are available during different semesters.
To facilitate the students' development as a physically educated individual the student learning objectives include:
• Develop the ability to perform critical elements of specific class activity skills.
• Acquire content knowledge of movement principles and identify how the principles apply to improving the effectiveness of movement within different physical activities.
• Understand the benefits of active participation in fitness and physical activity.
• Participate regularly in health enhancing physical activity.
• Achieve and maintain an appropriate physical fitness level based on the individuals age.
• Demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior while participating in class activities.
