Ernest Garrett

Ernest Garrett III came to Gallaudet University to pursue his desire to render school social work services on behalf of deaf and hard of hearing children, youth, and families.  Ernest believes that children are our most vulnerable population and came to Gallaudet’s MSW program because of its reputation for training competent and qualified social workers for direct practice with deaf and hard of hearing populations.  He also pursued a second MS degree in Administration to complement his social work background with skills in administration and supervision.

Ernest began his current position in 2011 as the Executive Director of the Missouri Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.  He is past-President of the National Black Deaf Advocates and is in private practice with his own company. Prior to his current position, he held a position as a school social worker at the Wisconsin School for the Deaf, and in the Special School District's Countywide Program for Students who are  Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

Ernest stated, “I recognized early in my practice as a school social worker that access to culturally affirmative and linguistically accessible services for deaf and hard of hearing clients are few and far between. I purposed in my heart that I would do what was in my power to remedy that deficit, particularly in the State of Missouri.” Obtaining the necessary professional credentials to practice social work in his state, he established his own business, Garrett LCSW & Consulting, L.L.C., in 2011.  Ernest credits his education at Gallaudet University for his ability to obtain the necessary certifications, licenses, and credentials needed for a successful career as a social work professional.
