Hayley Stokar
Hayley Stokar knew she wanted to work in the Deaf community, and knew of Gallaudet University’s great reputation for understanding social issues in the Deaf world. She graduated with her MSW in 2008 and has gone on to find great success in the field. While at Gallaudet, she was inducted into Phi Alpha, the social work honor society. She also obtained an Illinois State Social Work License. Hayley currently works as an Employment Specialist for Jewish Vocational Service in Chicago, IL. This organization serves many populations, including adults with disabilities and Deaf/Hard-of-hearing adults.
When asked about how Gallaudet prepared her for her work, Hayley stated, “At Gallaudet, the MSW program focused on the varied, specific needs of Deaf and Hard-of-hearing individuals. I am the only counselor at my agency with this specialized training, and it allows us to serve an otherwise under-served population in the Chicago area. “
Hayley’s advice to future graduate students is, “When it comes to dynamic, culturally relevant education for professionals in the Deaf community, Gallaudet is the gold standard. Take advantage of the academic and social offerings and there is no doubt you will be an asset to whatever professional community you join.”
