Margaux Delotte-Bennett

Margaux Delotte-Bennett came to Gallaudet University because she wanted to learn about the social work field and continue her ASL studies so that she could be a bridge between the hearing and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community in Washington, D.C.  Margaux graduated from the Social Work, M.S.W. program in 2007.  

Margaux currently works for a local nonprofit agency, “Sasha Bruce Youthwork, Inc.”  The agency is a 37-year old agency that provides support for runaway, homeless, neglected and under-resourced youth and families in Washington, DC.  She is the director of the P.O.W.E.R. Program, the agency’s sexual health and wellness initiative.  P.O.W.E.R. stands for prevention, outreach, wellness, education and risk reduction; all of the services we provide to the community in an effort to keep young people informed about the dangers and responsibility associated with being sexually active.

When asked about how Gallaudet prepared her for her career, she stated, “Gallaudet taught me how to think broadly about the social forces that impact the youth I serve and the broad range of ways we can help clients create change in their own lives.  The organization I am working for is actually the agency where I completed my first MSW internship and Sasha Bruce Youthwork has hosted additional interns in subsequent years.  I am also using the data analysis, program development and intervention skills that I learned on a daily basis and I continue to be inspired by my former Gallaudet teachers/ current colleagues in the social work profession.”

In addition to being a social worker, Margaux is also a poet and a performer.  Her second MSW internship was in India at an organization called the “Ability Foundation.”  She wrote a one woman show called Black & Kinky Amongst Brown Waves and one of the poems from the show won 2nd place in the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities 2010 Larry Neal Writers’ Awards.
