Every year hundreds of prospective students, parents, professionals, school groups, sign language classes and other special groups visit Gallaudet University. Our visitors come from all over the United States and from countries all around the world.
Visiting Gallaudet's campus, also known as Kendall Green, is the best way to learn about the breadth of our academic programs and to see our state-of-the-art facilities.
Guided Tours
Tours begin at the Visitors Center, located in the lobby of the Edward Miner Gallaudet Memorial Building (EMG), at 10 a.m. & 2 p.m., Monday-Friday and last approximately an hour. We limit each tour to a maximum of 25 people with some possible flexibility for up to 30. With advance notice, tours for larger groups may be arranged, depending on availability of staff and student tour guides.
How to schedule a tour
If you are considering or applying to Gallaudet as an undergraduate student you should schedule your tour through the undergraduate admissions office.
Everyone else—including prospective graduate students—should schedule tours directly with the Visitors Center by filling out the online request form.
Do you need an interpreter?
All of our tours are conducted in sign language. We provide voice interpreters for hearing visitors at no charge for tours scheduled by appointment. In order to make arrangements for an interpreter, we request that you give two weeks' advance notice of your visit. If you've made an appointment for an interpreted tour and need to cancel, please give us at least five days' notice.
Walk-ins and self-guided tours
Individuals who have not arranged a tour are more than welcome to join a tour booked by another group if there is available space-and when appropriate. For example, groups who commonly book tours in advance include hearing students from elementary schools, or international deaf groups requiring international sign language. Mixing visitors with a huge age or communication disparity can result in a less than optimal tour experience for some visitors. For this reason, discretion is left up to the Visitors Center coordinator to determine whether walk-in visitors can join a prior scheduled tour.
Also, not all scheduled tours will have an interpreter. In this case, hearing visitors who do not know sign language may opt to go on a tour by using the self-guided campus tour pamphlet available at the Visitors Center, or walk around the campus on their own with the guide pamphlet. Deaf and hard of hearing walk-in visitors may also opt to tour the campus on their own.
