GERMAN
Freud, Kant, Kafka, Goethe, Luther, Mozart, Beethoven, Einstein these are just a few of the many German-speaking historical giants who have made invaluable contributions to world culture in the areas of science, philosophy, religion, and the arts. German is important to America’s heritage. Famous German-Americans such as Thomas Nast (who created the image of the American Santa Claus known today), Levi Strauss (the inventor of jeans), the actress Marlene Dietrich, the rocket scientist Wernher von Braun, and Dwight Eisenhower, U.S. president from 1953 to 1961, are some of the many Americans with German heritage who have made significant contributions to American culture.
Our Department offers elementary courses in German. Elements of German Sign Language are infused in the Basic German language course as a curricular enhancement.
SPANISH
Many students opt to study Spanish because it is viewed as an important language to know in the U.S. The number of Hispanics in America is growing every day, and having a basic knowledge of Spanish language and culture can be a great asset in your future job search, particularly if you are planning on becoming a teacher, a social worker, or expect to prepare for another field where interaction with the Hispanic population is likely. If you are a student of Hispanic background, studying the language will help to give you pride in your heritage and connect with other family members. It will also facilitate traveling and studying abroad.
Our Department offers elective courses in the Spanish language as well as in literature and culture. We also on occasion offer courses in one of the sign languages of the Hispanic world. Depending on the semester, elements of a Hispanic sign language may be infused in the Basic Spanish language course as well.
