French is an excellent tool for careers in government, business, science, technology, fashion, art and culinary careers. In a recent listing of international jobs by the U.S. State Department, 53% required or preferred knowledge of French. French is an official working language of many important organizations, including the European Union, the Council of Europe, the International Labor Bureau, the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund and the International Red Cross. French is an official language of Canada, our most important trading partner, and it’s also the official language of business and trade in over two dozen African countries. France has the world’s second largest aeronautics industry and its highest concentration of mathematicians.
Our Department offers elementary and intermediate-level courses in French. An on-line course for Gallaudet or distance-education students is offered in addition to the standard face-to-face approach. Elements of LSF (French Sign Language) are infused in the Basic French language course as a curricular enhancement.
