Freud, Kant, Kafka, Goethe, Luther, Mozart, Beethoven, Einstein--these are just a few of the many German-speaking historical giants who have made invaluable contributions to world culture in the areas of science, philosophy, religion, and the arts. German is important to America’s heritage. Famous German-Americans such as Thomas Nast (who created the image of the American Santa Claus known today), Levi Strauss (the inventor of jeans), the actress Marlene Dietrich, the rocket scientist Wernher von Braun, and Dwight Eisenhower, U.S. president from 1953 to 1961, are some of the many Americans with German heritage who have made significant contributions to American culture.
Our Department offers elementary courses in German. Elements of German Sign Language are infused in the Basic German language course as a curricular enhancement.
