Many students opt to study Spanish because it is viewed as an important language to know in the U.S. The number of Hispanics in America is growing every day, and having a basic knowledge of Spanish language and culture can be a great asset in your future job search, particularly if you are planning on becoming a teacher, a social worker, or expect to prepare for another field where interaction with the Hispanic population is likely. If you are a student of Hispanic background, studying the language will help to give you pride in your heritage and connect with other family members. It will also facilitate traveling and studying abroad.
Our Department offers elective courses in the Spanish language as well as in literature and culture. We also on occasion offer courses in one of the sign languages of the Hispanic world. Depending on the semester, elements of a Hispanic sign language may be infused in the Basic Spanish language course as well.
