Gallaudet Interpreting Service is the campus provider of real-time captioning for classes, meetings and special events. GIS currently oversees the provision of captioning services for the Gallaudet community, working in partnership with Alternative Communication Services (a private company which has worked with Gallaudet for approximately 5 years) and Gallaudet Technology Services for the technical logistics in classrooms and meetings on campus. Real-time captioning services provide a text translation of the spoken content of a classroom or meeting event. There are two types of captioning services:
● CART is a verbatim text translation
● TypeWell is a text based summary
○ CART is the acronym for Communication Access Real-time Translation
○ TypeWell is also called text interpreting or C-Print
In both cases, the text is displayed on a computer or large screen display. GIS is also piloting a program where the text can be displayed on a personal laptop or tablet, which may provide better sight lines for a signed language environment. A transcript file can be provided after the event.
To submit a request for real-time captioning through GIS, please contact the relevant campus department, such as your academic advisor or academic department, to submit your request.
There are no charges to academic departments for real-time captioning for classes when requested by students or faculty for academic purposes. Charges may apply for other events.
