GUP 10 The Gallaudet - Federal Connection
This course describes Gallaudet's unique relationship with the Federal Government. Included are topics such as the appropriations process, the law providing certain Federal benefits to Gallaudet, and the importance of Gallaudet's identity as a private institution.
GUP 12 Administering Compensation
This course will help managers understand the new staff compensation system, be able to explain it to staff and answer questions, and be able to link compensation to the Performance Evaluation process.
GUP 13 Evaluating Staff Performance
Establishing clear expectations and measures are key to valid performance evaluations. This course will introduce methods of establishing expectations, providing in-process feedback, assessing outcomes, and creating evaluations that employees will find valid, actionable, and perhaps even motivational for future improved performance.
GUP 14 Business Process tools and Techniques
This course will teach basic internal control concepts, present scenarios illustrating controls in action, and to help participants implement effective internal controls efficiently and diplomatically. The focus is on business processes such as financial integrity and accountability, fraud prevention, financial authorization procedures, audit trails, protecting confidential documents, travel arrangements, computer security, payroll processes, and purchasing.
GUP 15 Risk Management
Managers play a significant role in risk management, an important aspect of protecting Gallaudet from lawsuits and financial settlements This course will cover issues such as civil rights laws, environmental laws, student protections, workplace injury, travel safety, ADA, and the Family and Medical Leave Act. It will also teach strategies for managing interactions so that issues get resolved before they become significant problems with risk ramifications.
GUP 18 Managing the Hiring Process
You have ethical and legal responsibilities in the recruitment and selection of individuals who will become working members of the Gallaudet community. Learn the staff hiring process steps and timelines, interview procedures do's and don'ts, and how to run an effective screening committee.
LAW 3 Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
This workshop covers the 1974 Family Education Rights and Privacy Act. Participants will learn about Gallaudet's policies and practices with respect to student information, and will learn their responsibilities about guarding student data.
LAW 4 Civil Treatment for Managers
Managers will learn about laws pertaining to sexual harassment and the hostile work environment. Emphasis will be placed on creating a positive, respectful work environment including setting expectations and preventing harassing innuendos and behaviors, how to respond to informal as well as formal complaints, techniques for managing offensive behavior in staff, reporting obligations, and the formal process for processing and addressing complaints.
LAW 5 Civil Treatment for Employees
It is designed to teach employees respectful behavior and what they cannot say (or do) that others might find offensive or illegal in the workplace.
LD 102 Managing Conflict
Using the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument, participants will learn to recognize their own responses to conflict situations and to develop a wider array of personal responses. In addition, participants will learn how to analyze a conflict situation, differentiate among needs and wants, invent options, and negotiate for win/win outcomes.
LD 105 Tools for Effective Meetings
Participants will learn the basics of leading and participating in effective group decision making processes. Topics will include agenda building and agenda management; organizing group roles; leadership responsibilities and behaviors; methods for managing decision making effectively; and how to clarify action steps and ensure that follow-up occurs.
LD 111 Leadership in the 21st Century
Making the connection: leadership skills and emotional intelligence. Participants will explore the characteristics needed to be successful leaders. IT will be demonstrated that intelligence alone does not necessarily provide all that it takes to succeed as a leader in today's workplace.
LD 112 Professional Presence and Communications
Building on the first session and incorporating information from Myers Briggs Type Indicator, participants will concentrate on how type preference has an impact on communications skills and ultimately on the ability to lead and collaborate with colleagues.
LD 113 What Makes Employees Thrive
Considerable research has been done on what makes today's worker feel happy and motivated. Is it money? The research says NO participants will explore this topic and understand the sometimes, not so obvious issues that makes working people thrive.
LD 114 Coaching and Supervising Your People
Top down management style has given way to a more collaborative approach in leading and managing the work of other people. Participants will explore the concept of coaching as a methodology of enhancing desire outcomes from individuals under their leadership.
LD 115 Dealing with Difficult Employees
Despite everyone's best efforts, occasionally an individual slips through the recruitment process "safety net" and becomes your difficult employee. In this session participants will define what is a difficult employee and explore ways of handing these tough situations.
LD 116 Working in Teams
The nature of work today requires individuals to work well not only within departments but also to work effectively across functions. In this session the idea of teamwork will be explored. Participants will come to understand what a true team is as opposed to a work group.
PSF101 Finance 101: Gallaudet Budget Basics
The class overviews of high level financial situation at Gallaudet, basic budgeting concepts, what the PS reports contains, how to analyze your department's budget, basic excel functions and general budget practices.
