American Sign Language (ASL) Teacher
The Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD) is recruiting for an American Sign Language Teacher. MSSD is located on the beautiful 100-acre campus of Gallaudet University, in our nation’s capitol.
Qualifications:
Requires a Master’s degree in Deaf Education, bilingual education, education of the deaf or a related field with specific coursework in ASL Linguistics and language development and assessment. (if your Master’s degree is in Deaf Education, your Bachelor Degree or certification showing ASL course work required). Teaching experience in ASL required; knowledge and experience in innovative teaching practices; planning, implementing and researching units of instruction, projects and daily lesson plans. Experience in teaching multi-level groups of students. Excellent command of written English required. Fluency in American Sign Language required.
*The Clerc Center is currently in the process of adopting teacher certification standards for all KDES and MSSD teachers, in compliance with No Child Left Behind expectations. Once these policies are approved, all teachers (including new hires) will be required to comply by obtaining and maintaining a valid teacher certification/license. At this time, the Clerc Center is encouraging all teachers to take the Praxis I exam, as well as content area and deaf education Praxis II exams.
Other Information: Applicants selected for interviews take a 30-minute writing test (testing English grammar). Applicants accepting job offers are required to undergo and pay for a background investigation.
Responsibilities:
Planning, implementing and researching effective instructional practices that maximize student learning; accountable for student achievement; develops instructional plans/units that incorporate the national mission priorities of literacy, transition, and family involvement; collaborates with other educators in the department to provide an effective instructional program; documents and monitors student progress; communicates with families regarding student progress; maintains professional growth; accountable for student safety; engages in action research for continuous improvement of instruction.
Compensation:
Appointment/Salary: 194 workdays over 10-months (salary spread over 12 months) if you work a full academic year; however, salary/work days will be prorated for a start date after the opening of school. Salary is commensurate with educational degree and experience.
