ASL-DES Testimonials

Focus Topic Preparation (FTP)
For the past few years, we have brought our student commencement speakers to ASL Diagnostic and Evaluation Services (ASL-DES) for help with translating their speeches from written English to ASL gloss and for ASL coaching. The ASL-DES staff have been fantastic and an outstanding resource for the students. We could not be more pleased with the results. Dr. Jeff Lewis, Chair, Student Commencement Speakers Selection Committee

American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI)
"As nerve-racking as this process is for a non-native signer, every step of the way is easy and flows perfectly. Thank You!" Undergraduate Student

"I was extremely nervous coming in for my test and was greeted in such a way that made me feel at ease. My interviewer was very nice and made me feel really comfortable. Overall, it was a great experience. Great staff!" Examinee, Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC)

"The staff was very friendly and put me at ease. I was a little nervous but by the time I started the interview, I was much more relaxed! The screening itself was relaxed and over before I knew it! They were also very flexible with scheduling and understanding about needing test results sooner than normal." Student, Interpreter Preparation Program

"I would like to take this opportunity to share my experience with the ASLPI at Gallaudet. I am a student at Catonsville Community College and the ASLPI is a requirement for my program. I contacted the ASL-DES office to make the necessary arrangements for my interview and what I got was quite unexpected. The office was not only incredibly professional but also offered me an incredible amount of advice and much needed encouragement! On the day of the interview, I was greeted by Marti who helped me tremendously by "warming me up" with casual conversation in ASL. This really helped me to feel comfortable and confident before my interview. I found the interviewer to be quite kind and the facility to be state of the art. Thank you ASL-DES for the service and support!" Christine, Interpreter-in-training at CCBC

"I got my ASLPI score in the mail yesterday, and it's *exactly* where I expected it to be! I've only been seriously signing for two years to the day of this writing. My progress has been slow but steady. I want to thank ASL-DES and my interviewer for a most enjoyable experience. It was quick and comfortable - I really liked the interview room - the lighting and the tech equipment was first rate." Kevin from Hawaii

"Our program heavily relies upon the ASLPI to ensure our students have the skills necessary to progress through our program. Our students either travel to Gallaudet or take the ASLPI via videophone. This service is very important to our university and serves as a quality screening. We are very pleased that Gallaudet and Bloomsburg have such a positive working relationship with regards to the ASLPI, and we plan to continue to use the ASLPI as a prerequisite benchmark that our students must take to continue with the program." American Sign Language/English Interpreting Program, Bloomsburg University, PA

"The Deaf Education Program at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) requires Deaf and Hard of Hearing teaching credential candidates to take the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) to demonstrate ASL fluency prior to their student teaching experience. ASL Diagnostic and Evaluation Services (ASL-DES) conducts the ASLPI for our students approximately three times per year. Our experiences with ASL-DES have been positive and productive. Timely communications and organization have facilitated our processes and enabled us to deliver a high-quality service to our candidates. The service provided by ASL-DES is invaluable to our operations. We are committed to the idea and practice that teachers of deaf/hard of hearing children must be proficient in ASL as a minimum requirement for teaching. Administration and scoring of the ASLPI are an integral part of our program, enabling us to ensure this basic requirement."
