Inclusive Bilingualism: Understanding the Gallaudet Mission

The Office of the Provost hosted a series of events during the 2007-2008 academic year, focusing on Inclusive Bilingualism

What is this series all about?

For the first time in its history, Gallaudet University has embraced its inherent bilingual character in its Mission Statement.  As we move toward greater intentionality and rigor related to the mission, the University community needs to develop a more common understanding of what "inclusive bilingualism" means at Galaludet University in the 21st century.  Like most bilingual environments where majority and minority languages coexist, contentious issues of power, access, and justice are at the forefront of concerns at Gallaudet.  Therefore, the purpose of the series is:

  • work toward a common understanding of inclusive bilingualism, and
  • openly discuss how we can talk about contentious issues with collegiality and respect.

On this web site, you will find an emerging  list of bilingualism resources.
