2009 Mr. & Miss MSSD Pageant Winners Announced
In the Mr. & Miss MSSD Pageant held on November 14, each of the six contestants competed in six categories: Private Interview, DC Spirit, Talent Competition, Platform Presentation, Formal Wear Competition, and On-Stage Interview. Winner Lukas Morkevicius portrayed Amos Kendall for his DC Spirit entry and performed an end-of-the-world scenario in an ASL version of "2012" for his talent entry. For his platform presentation, Morkevicius advocated the benefits of international travel. Winner Mindy Enriquez portrayed the Helen Keller statue newly installed in the Capitol for her DC Spirit entry and performed an ASL interpretation of the song, "Tu Amor" for her talent entry. For her platform, Enriquez gave a humorous presentation on teen phone phobia. Morkevicius and Enriquez will represent MSSD at the Mr./Miss Deaf Teen America Pageant this spring.
MSSD's Junior NAD chapter hosted this year's MSSD "iPageant." The theme reflected the new opportunities students have in today's digital age. The pageant judges were Tara Downing, a family educator at KDES and a well-known dancer and choreographer; Cesar Ayala, a Gallaudet University communications student who started the hit campus show, Bison's Next Top Model; and Dr. Shilpa Hanumantha, a post-doctoral research fellow for the Visual Language and Visual Learning Center at Gallaudet.
