Clerc Center Community Salutes Gallaudet’s New President
Students, teachers, and staff from Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES) and the Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD) participated in the inauguration of Gallaudet University's 10th president, T. Alan Hurwitz, on May 12.
The festivities began with an academic procession and a colorful flag parade. Students from the University and the Model Secondary School for the Deaf carried the flags of 52 countries and every U.S. state, territory, and the District of Columbia to represent the diversity of the people who have been a part of the Gallaudet community, past and present.
After a welcome from Benjamin Soukup, chairman of the Board of Trustees, KDES students Alyssa Biega, Jason Cruz, Bailey Doleac, Ksenia Markel, Diana Mendes, Emily Nover, and Yireh Sanchez captivated the audience with their sign interpretation of the National Anthem.
Representatives from the University community praised Dr. Hurwitz for his commitment to education and wished him well as he undertakes the leadership of Gallaudet. The Clerc Center was represented by KDES student Johanna Cruz, MSSD student Vianney Boum Yamb, and KDES teacher Anibelka Henriquez. Cruz shared how she sees Hurwitz as someone who sets goals for himself and accomplishes them. Yamb brought greetings on behalf of MSSD students, and encouraged the president to come and visit the school often. Dr. Hurwitz shared his goals of cherishing the heritage of Gallaudet and continuing to work towards a bright and promising future for all members of the community.
