MSSD Students from the Class of 2010 Become Newest Alumni
Parents, families, and friends gathered for the annual commencement ceremony on Friday, June 11 to celebrate with the Class of 2010. Gallaudet University president Dr. T. Alan Hurwitz and Clerc Center Vice President Ed Bosso congratulated the students. Franklin C. Torres, an MSSD alumnus from the Class of 1993 and a native of Peru, gave the commencement speech. Currently a member of the teaching faculty of English and Applied Literacy at Gallaudet, Torres encouraged the graduates to develop a goal, and use creative resources to reach that goal and to remember to "ask for help...Volunteer, be a role model for young deaf people...Do something, stand up and be counted."
Valedictorian, Timothy Martin and salutatorian, Carolina Kohn also gave remarks. Martin came to the U.S. from China in 2001. He plans to study applied computer technology at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, and to pursue his dream of playing ping-pong on the U.S. Olympic team. Kohn shared a story about perseverance. An avid volleyball player, she and her team lost two of the first sets of the semi-finals this year. After the initial losses, the team pulled together and won the third, fourth, and fifth set at the semi-finals and then went on to win the league championship.
The following scholarships were awarded:
Peter B. Hobbs Spirit Award: Xian Huang.
Alan R. Williams Scholarships: Ashleigh Dreyer and Wade Green.
The Gallaudet University Scholarships (part tuition for four years):
Quisuana Carter, Ashleigh Dreyer, Esther Fass, Kayla Gonzalez, Sophia Patrick, and Martha Wolcott.
Congratulations to the Class of 2010!
